Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Special notes

[edit]

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:Ambassadors of Liberia to Tanzania

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Too-small "Ambassadors of X to Y" category. As always, categories of this type are not automatically created for just one person -- there are around 200 countries in the world, so if every possible X-to-Y and Y-to-X combination were created there would be 40,000 categories involved (i.e. the tree would be unbrowsably massive). But navigation is not aided by funneling everything down into the narrowest possible microcategories of one, so there would have to be at least five Liberian ambassadors to Tanzania with articles before a dedicated subcategory for them was warranted, while for just one person the parent categories are all that's required. Bearcat (talk) 16:38, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:American people of Brijwasi descent

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Too-small categories, newly created for just one or two people without clear evidence that either of them are needed. As always, we do not automatically create "X people of Y descent" categories for every possible combination of X and Y that can describe just one or two people with Wikipedia articles -- there would need to be at least five articles in each of these before either of them was warranted.
And none of the three articles involved here actually state or source that their subjects are specifically "Brijwasi" or "Awadhi", either, but all just state that their subjects moved to the US from India without delving into their family backgrounds in more depth at all, so people clearly can't be defined by an ethnic background that nobody's ever been arsed to actually add any content about.
Meanwhile, Awadhi people does lead to an article that describes its subject as an Indian ethnic group, but Brijwasi people does not, so I can't even determine whether that one's even a real ethnic classification in the first place.
So I'm willing to withdraw this if somebody can actually find enough other people who can be added to them to justify them on size grounds, but they're not needed for just one or two articles. Bearcat (talk) 16:18, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:InfoWars people

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Talk:Infowars/Archive 2#Requested move 11 December 2024Fourthords | =Λ= | 15:42, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:College softball venues by team in the United States

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NARROWCAT. All of these categories have fewer than 5 articles and redirects. User:Namiba 15:25, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Annual events by month

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Redundant category layer with only 1 subcategory. –Aidan721 (talk) 14:21, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People from Woodfin, North Carolina

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category with just one entry. Lost in Quebec (talk) 13:07, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Australian female journalists

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: We already have Category:Australian women journalists. LibStar (talk) 09:33, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Australian families needing state disambiguation

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: We've renamed any US state subcategories of Category:American families by state or territory that need disambiguation by state to put the state in parentheses at the end. These are the only Australian categories that fall outside this rubric (there are plenty with "Australia" in parentheses). Seems like following that US precedent would be good. Mike Selinker (talk) 08:47, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Roman Martyrology by month

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Not a helpful container category with only a single subcategory. Upmerge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 03:23, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Murders in Paraguay by year

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Not useful for navigation. Merge/delete per WP:NARROW/WP:OCYEAR. Manually merge to the third target. –Aidan721 (talk) 00:44, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Clear consensus that an upmerge is needed; should we keep some of the ones which will be better populated by upmerging?

Category:Foreign civilians killed in the Syrian civil war

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: No need to distinguish that they're "Foreign civilians", furthermore, many of these people were journalists, which already exists as a catregory Category:Journalists killed while covering the Syrian civil war. SMasonGarrison 04:23, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Smasongarrison: What about Category:Foreigners killed in the Syrian civil war in general? AHI-3000 (talk) 08:29, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have mixed feelings about it. If both nominations go through it would be empty. SMasonGarrison 14:12, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Smasongarrison: Shouldn't it be nominated together with all the other "Foreign people in the Syrian civil war" categories? And for that matter, why is the discussion for the "foreign soldiers in Syria" categories in a separate section below? AHI-3000 (talk) 19:09, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I used the CFD tool to nominate them, so that defaults to doing them separately. SMasonGarrison 20:04, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Autistic transgender people

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:EGRS, I don't this we need to diffuse this 3x intersection. SMasonGarrison 02:19, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Merge to Category:Transgender people with disabilities?

Category:Romani genocide victims

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Redundant category layer with survivors and those who died as a result. SMasonGarrison 14:08, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

Category:Kho Kho infobox templates

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Declined C1 as non-empty, but useless for navigation as it contains one template that is already in another category. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 10:22, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Now has two templates; is this enough to keep the category?

Category:People wounded in the 20 July plot

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Borderline C2C because thet siblings in Survivors of terrorist attacks use Survivors of FOO. But I wanted to see if I'm missing something SMasonGarrison 14:07, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
